She didn't want to cry. Monako was afraid, and hurt, but she was trying to be brave. Brave like her uncles, like her father and mother. They never showed their fear, even when they were in trouble, and she was trying so hard to be like them.

But she couldn't keep the tear from rolling down her face as she stumbled along the dark streets of the unfamiliar city, holding her burned arm to her chest and dressed in a torn night gown. She sobbed as she stumbled again, her bare feet catching painfully on the uneven sidewalk.

She stopped to lean against a wall, closing her eyes tightly against the tears.

"Alec... kaa-san..." she sobbed with a hiccup, finally sliding to her knees. She just wanted to go home...

"Oh, hey! I'm Hailey Beth Stokes, but jus' call me Hailey, okay? What's your name?" Hailey finally looked back at her and said, still dragging the girl into the Hyperion and over to an elevator so that they could get to her floor faster.

Mona made a face at walking in to the nice hotel with her feet as they were, but there wasn't much else she could do about it right then. When they were in the elevator, she was able to catch her breath, letting out a sigh and touching her burn gingerly. It still stung. Badly.

"Oh. Monako Lise Edwards. I was named after the Mona Lisa! ... but you can call me Mona, everyone else does."

"'kay! Mona! S'nice to meet you! Oh, and uh, this is Teddy," She said, nodding at the Phascomon in her arms.

"He's real quiet and real nice."

"What... is he? He looks like a tanuki... kind of..." Mona asked as the elevator went up, looking down at the strange creature Hailey was holding.

"Whassa tanuki?" Hailey asked, then giggled.

"He's a bear! And he's alive, too! Don't worry, he's nice!"
